CATALINA SERRA QUINTANA Was born in the neighbourhood called Coll d'en Rabassa, in Palma de Mallorca, on April 26th 1937. That day, during the Spanish Civil War, the town of Guernica was bombarded. This event inspired one of the masterpieces of universal painting. She went to school till 13 years old, when was proposed for a job wich could not refuse: On the hand, it was a help for her family, and on the other hand, it meant to do something she had always liked a lot; to paint... and her job involved painting tiles murals. Some months later, the painter who she worked for, lent her his oil paints, and could paint her first and only picture on canvas during years: the house where she was born and where her father was born. Because of family circumstances, when she bought her first oil paints. 23 years had passed since that first picture (even though she had painted a lot of murals, all sizes, about traditional themes of majorcan pottery). And because of the same circumstances, her devote to painting was limited to one or two pictures an year. But from that moment everything changed. She went taking part in several collective samples, and in 1984 took part in her first painter meeting, at the village of Búger. So did it next year, and also in the Painting International Meeting of "Barranc de Biniaraix", and since then she has gone increasing her production and her artistic registers variety with no stop. Now we find a painter with a great projection, a great technical quality, and with a poetry wich offers a life full of experiences and an extraordinary natural environment like Majorca Island is. |
